Birds & Birds of Prey in the Loire Valley
Not forgetting our friends the red squirrels!!

As Les Fleurs, self catering cottages in the Loire,  is surrounded by vineyards, sunflowers, trees and fields we have other visitors to our garden and grounds that don’t have to book!!

Here we have listed just a few that can be seen and heard.

Red Squirrel Red Squirrel
We have been enjoying watching the antics of a family of red squirrels for a couple of years. One or more visit the gardens regularly and scamper over any low roof. During the winter they dine in style ‘A la Les Fleurs’ on a variety of nuts we put out for the birds.

Lapwing
Lapwings are to be seen in the fields and vineyards that surround us.

Hoopoe
A pair of Hoopoes have  been  nesting very close to our garden as they are frequent visitors often perching on top of our bread oven making their very distinctive cry.

Wren Wren
When Jon was replacing the roof over the bread oven, a pair of wrens that were nesting, we think, in our wood pile, became very angry with him.

Fieldfare Robin
Fieldfare Robins are frequent visitors.
Humming bird Moth
Hummingbird moths are regular visitors to our lavender garden and guests have taken some marvellous photographs which they have happily shared with us, sadly our computer was visited by a less friendly bug and we lost everything we had been sent.

Cuckoo
The cuckoo can be heard all day long with its haunting cry…

Black bird Male Black bird Female
The male blackbird is very territorial. The female is much less distinctive.
Wood pecker
A pair of wood peckers have visited us for a number of years and their ‘pecking’ can be heard quite clearly.

Tit Tit Thrush

Tits and thrushes are just a few more of our winged visitors!!

Not forgetting Birds of Prey
